Stonehedge Fiber Mill "Shepherd's Wool" Yarns for Sale

Many of the colors of the Shepherd's Wool line

I am proud to introduce our new line of yarns, designed and spun right here at Stonehedge Fiber Mill. I call it Shepherd's Wool and believe it will set the standard for top-quality handknitting yarns at a very reasonable price, making heirloom handknit projects affordable.

Shepherd's Wool is made from a wonderfully soft Merino top. Merino is the softest of sheep's wool. It is washed, combed into top, and dyed to my specifications. I then pindraft it, often blending additional colors (all the heathery colors are blends), and spin it on my machines. I occasionally add new colors, so please check back here before ordering.

The three-ply yarn is spun to 1000 yards per pound, which in 4-ounce skeins is 250 yards per skein. It knits like any commercial worsted weight yarn, about 5 stitches to the inch on size 6-8 needles. This yarn is worsted spun, meaning it's very very smooth and almost shiny in appearance. It will give great stitch definition for intricate patterns such as lace, cables, and knit/purl patterns.

Some of our customers have remarked on the soft, cushy feel of this yarn. "Has a very nice handle" and "One of the softest wools I've felt" are frequent comments. Shepherd's Wool also felts very well, including the white, so you can be confident your knit and felted projects will be great.

Shepherd's Wool Colors

Here's the entire current line (as of July 09) of the colors of Shepherd's Wool yarn. Please remember that every monitor displays colors a little differently. Call us if you have any questions about what a particular color looks like. Colors that are heathered are marked with (H). They are a blend of two or more colors. The rest are solids.

All Shepherd's Wool colors are also available in top (white and solids only), pindrafted top (heathered blends), or roving (all colors). If you're coming from a distance to buy, it's a good idea to call ahead to make sure your choice is available in the quantity you desire.
